Who Is Andrew Blake? The Self-Narrative Of A Legendary Adult Film Maker
– by Andrew Blake
Over the years my career has taken many paths, while exploring the world of Erotic Filmmaking and Photography.
My interest in fashion and architecture have been a hallmark of my style from the beginning. I view my work as a glorification of glamour and the beauty of the female form.

To set the location for my work, I’ve sought out major architectural homes in Los Angeles and Europe creating unique visual scenes, unlike those of the most of the adult industry. Two such homes are architect John Lautner’s masterpiece Sheats/Goldstein house in Beverly Hills, featured in “POSSESSIONS” and “AROUSED” and a Villa high above Nice, on the French Riviera, where I filmed “DELIRIOUS”.
My work has been described as “decadent, lush, opulent, unfailingly arousing, moneyed and sophisticated.” The films usually include fetish, bondage, and lesbian imagery, sometimes excluding men entirely.
Sex writer Violet Blue called my work: “A whole different genre of explicit erotic filmmaking evident from the first frame — pure high fashion, glossy candy land fantasy. It is luxuriously designed from nip tip to toe. And it’s stylish as hell.”
Having begun my career working on soft-core movies for The Playboy Channel, and then for Penthouse, producing Pet centerfolds for home video, I decided to form my own production company, Studio A Entertainment, where my creativity and imagination could flourish.
I have been fortunate to be the winner of many awards for my cinematic style and production design. My first major adult film, “NIGHT TRIPS” was awarded the Silver Medal in the Non-Theatrical Release Category at the Worldfest-Houston International Film Festival. I hold the distinction of being the first adult director to win an award at a mainstream international film festival.
I have been included in the AVN Hall of Fame and XRCO Hall of Fame and received an Excellence in Progressive Erotica Award from XBIZ.
When casting my movies, I have sought out some of the worlds most beautiful actresses, willing to appear nude. My films include Janine Lindemulder in her first Adult Film,”HIDDEN OBSESSIONS”, This film became an instant hit, making Lindemulder a star and is notable for the ‘Ice Dildo’ scene, between Janine and her co-star, Julia Ann. It won the “Best Sellng Title of the Year”‘ AVN award. It continues to this day to be a very popular title because of its hot boy/girl scenes and its lush production values, including an underwater tryst.
Traveling frequently to Paris and Rome to shoot, I always found International travel to be a jolt to my creativity. While in Europe I was introduced to Hungarian Anita Blond, Slavic beauty, Kyla Cole and sexual dynamos, Lea Martini and Coralie. i would bring along with me my talented American models, the very buxom and beautiful, Aria Giovanni, my famous redhead Justine Joli and the exotic, Adriana Sage. My fascination continued for years with Dahlia Grey because of her long legs and statuesque frame. My longtime crew consisted of my Fashion Stylist, Nicole and Key Make-Up Artist Carotte, both very French with avant-garde sensibilities.
One of my favorite movies that I filmed abroad is “PARIS CHIC” starring Coralie. It featured Lea Martini and Anita Blond Both were popular performers in Europe that I introduced to the US audience. “PARIS CHIC” had many unusual scenes including a sexual encounter on the streets near the Arc de Triomphe in a Rolls Royce. The film also featured apartments in period Louis XV furnishings, and two contemporary apartments filled with Modern Art.
Featured in my film PIN-UPS 2, was the vintage fashion icon Dita Von Tease. Her appearance highlighted my interest in a fetish and kinky lifestyle. After her brief stint in adult films, her career continued on as a world renowned fetish burlesque star.
As my filming continued throughout the years, I decided to pare down my crew to just my Stylist, Make-Up artist, one assistant and the Models, creating a more intimate style of filmmaking. For equipment I used my Super 16mm wind-up Bolex film camera. The use of this kind of camera was considered a true novelty as most movies were being shot on video and I preferred to continue with a more “old style” take on filmmaking. The camera gave my work a distinct look and feel.
Other films in my collection include “PAID COMPANIONS”, “X” and “X2”. In this work, I introduced a phrase I called “Cinema Abstract”, a style that is dreamlike and evocative. The best example of this is the 30 minute featurette “CONTEMPT”, included on “X2”. It has flowing editing that cross cuts on free associations, much as the brain does when approaching orgasm. I have chosen to create my films as a series of vignettes, not relying on a story driven plot or distinct narrative.
The clip that accompanies this article is from “THE VILLA”, shot in Frascati, Italy. The haunting atmosphere of this 15th century Villa lent itself to the evocative style of filmmaking that I had become drawn to . The Villa became a character in the movie along with my cast of exquisite women who represented an international mix of beauties.
