Calico’s latest screed is all about asking questions about the nature of celebrity. What does it mean to be a “star,” for example? Does the definition depend on what kind of entertainment or business a person is in? Can a relatively obscure athlete become a “star” overnight, simply by changing careers? And what the hell is an “ASD Calicio,” anyway?
Find out the answers to these and other questions in Calico’s latest post, “Of Stardom, Shock Career Moves And The Benefits Of Higher Porn-Education” …

I’m not a big sports fan, so most of what I know about the pro sports world is what I’ve absorbed through osmosis and proximity to my husband – who claims not to be sports fan, but for someone who isn’t a fan sure seems to yell at the television a lot when certain teams are playing thereon.
In any event, when I think of a pro sports “star,” what comes to mind for me is a guy like Lebron James – someone whose fame so transcends the sport he plays, even non-fans are likely to recognize his name and face, even if it’s only because they’ve seen him in a bunch of goofy ads for Sprite.
Don’t You Have To Be At Least A Little Famous To Be A “Star”?
If there’s one sport which has truly seized my husband’s fancy, it’s football – no, not that “football,” I mean the other football.
So, when I saw a Sports Illustrated headline proclaiming a “shock career change” on the part of a professional footballer who has decided to try his hand (among other body parts) at performing in porn, the last response I expected to hear from my husband upon being informed of the player’s name was “Who?”
According to the article, a player named Davide Lovinella recently applied for a role in a Rocco Siffredi (of whom my husband wryly says “Him I’ve heard of”) movie and is now on his way to the Siffredi Academy to learn the ins and outs (so to speak) of being a porn star.
“Are you sure you’ve never heard of this guy,” I ask my husband in follow-up. “The URL of the article refers to him as an ‘Italian football star,’ so I figure he must be pretty good.”
A snort from the kitchen comes in response. “Nope,” he says. “Does the article say who he plays for?”
I give the article a quick scan, looking for any sort of brand name with the letters “FC” attached to it. No such luck – but eventually I discern the answer.
“It says he plays for ASC Calcio,” I proclaim, suddenly more enthused than is reasonable. “That’s almost ASC Calico!”
There’s a commonly-used abbreviation for what my husband does next. I’ll give you a hint: It starts and ends with L.
“Jesus,” my husband says, once he’s finally done cackling. “I think that’s a lower-tier team in Italy. This guy’s about as much of a football star as I am.”
Maybe This Career Move Isn’t So “Shocking,” After All
If I’m this Davide Lovinella guy, maybe I’m tired of working my ass off at my profession, just to find myself laboring in the Serie D league – which, as it turns out, is a non-professional football association.
Hell, maybe it’s not so much that I’m keen to appear in porn, just keen to be legitimately referred to as a star, because let’s face it, porn is the one entertainment vocation in which every performer is commonly referred to as a “star,” even if she or he has appeared in a single scene.
Don’t get me wrong, there’s nothing easy about being a porn star – a fact which, thankfully, Lovinella already seems to have absorbed.
“It’s not like being in bed with your partner,” Lovinella said, “so you have to work hard and be stable.”
Eh, that’s close to the truth about being a porn performer – but in the context of a male porn star’s career requirements, I might rearrange it to “You have to be hard and work stable.”
The Dream Isn’t Dead
While I applaud Lovinella for committing to higher porn-education at the Siffredi Academy as part of his career move, I’m also glad to hear his dream of playing football isn’t falling completely by the wayside as he pursues his new career in adult entertainment.
“The ideal would be to find a club in Hungary,” Lovinella said.
You don’t say? Well, watch out, Nemzeti Bajnokság III – sounds like you’ve got a fast-rising “star” headed your way!
