Whenever there’s a sex scandal in the news, unless it involves abuse of some kind, Calico’s immediate inclination is to feel sorry for the people involved in the scandal. Provided nobody got hurt, coerced or otherwise harmed, it’s just nobody’s goddamn business except those directly involved.

There’s an important exception to this general rule of Cal’s though: When the people involved in the scandal are public prudes who frequently and publicly shame others, then their hypocrisy makes them fair game for mockery, even if the particulars of sexual element of the scandal shouldn’t open them up to ridicule by itself.

Of course Calico also wants to understand what motivates people, including what drives their desires and compels them to indulge in a particular kink. In pursuit of that understanding, she often employs her trusty Focus Group of One, AKA her husband.

As such, when a story broke suggesting that erstwhile Christian Liberty University President Jerry Falwell Jr. enjoys watching his wife have sex with other men, Calico raised (not for the first time) relevant questions with her husband. Does the idea of watching another man fuck Calico appeal to him? What does he think drives the desire to be cuckolded?

Some years back, when cuckolding-themed websites became something of a big trend in the porn industry, I decided to take my husband’s temperature on the idea, just to hear what he had to say. Does the notion of watching some other guy fuck me appeal to him?

The initial response he gave me was: “Is this your way of telling me you want to see other people? If so, just tell it to me straight.”

After assuring him it was purely a hypothetical question, I got his real response: “Hell no.” 

“Not unless there’s some sort of Indecent Proposal situation going on,” he added, “and even then, I wouldn’t actually watch you fuck him. I’d just cash the check and try to forget the whole thing while sitting on a beach somewhere, sipping drinks with little umbrellas sticking out of them.”

Maybe They Should Rebrand as “Christian Libertine” University

As you might have guessed, what got me thinking about cuckolding was the emerging (and disputed) saga of Christian Jerry Fallwell Jr., his wife Becki and a fellow named Giancarlo Granda – which, by the way, is a simply terrific name, the kind a fiction writer would definitely give to a man who has sex with the wife of a famous evangelical leader while that famous evangelical leader watches from the corner of the room.

To be clear, I don’t give a rat’s tiny, hairy ass what Jerry and Becki Falwell are into and I don’t think they should be shamed for it, if indeed Granda’s version of events is the truth.

That’s distinct from thinking the Christian Falwells shouldn’t catch a raft of shit over the revelations in the context of their past statements about other people’s sex lives being shameful, however. And it’s clear the reason the Falwells are being raked over the coals isn’t the nature of their sexual proclivities, but the fact that those proclivities are so at odds with their stated worldview. In other words, it’s not the ‘perversion’ but the perceived hypocrisy, which is driving the mass schadenfreude in response to the reports, my own included.

To that I say “fair enough.” If you’re a person who goes around decrying the lack of sexual morality in others – and your definition of proper sexual morality does not include husbands watching other men fuck their wives – I’m not inclined to feel a lot of sympathy for you when you start getting mocked all over social media over your kink.

I Confess: It Was All My Wife’s Fault

For what it’s worth, Falwell himself describes the whole thing as more of an extortion situation, comparing it not to Indecent Proposal, but to Fatal Attraction.

“During a vacation over eight years ago, Becki and I met an ambitious young man who was working at our hotel and was saving up his money to go to school,” Jerry wrote in a statement he provided to The Washington Examiner. “We encouraged him to pursue an education and a career and we were impressed by his initiative… Shortly thereafter, Becki had an inappropriate personal relationship with this person, something in which I was not involved — it was nonetheless very upsetting to learn about.”

That sound you just heard was the bus wheels bouncing over Becki like a Christian evangelical speedbump – but don’t fret: Jerry takes his measure of the blame here, too… sort of.

“After I learned this, I lost 80 pounds and people who saw me regularly thought that I was physically unwell, when in reality I was just balancing how to be most supportive of Becki, who I love, while also reflecting and praying about whether there were ways I could have been more supportive of her and given her proper attention. I came to realize that while it may be easy to judge others on their behavior, the King James Bible reminds us — ‘Thou shalt not commit adultery, but I sayeth unto you, that whoever looketh upon a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her in his heart.’ In fact, there are ways we may all be sinning, but the Lord believes in this self-reflection.”

Oh, that Lord – He’s just so understanding! I mean, you know, so long as you aren’t doing something He considers to be an “abomination” like eating shellfish and crickets, laying down with a man as with a woman, or anything else truly terrible like that.

Perversion He Understands; Professing Piety is the Head-Scratcher

Since I opened this post with a confused word from my husband, I’ll close with one from him, too. After the Christian Falwell/Granda story broke, I asked him again about cuckolding, this time focusing on what he thought the appeal might be to a guy like Falwell. 

Sounding a bit like the well-known sex and marriage therapist Marty Klein, he shrugged and said “Maybe he gets off on feeling shame, or maybe he thinks of the humiliation as being his wife’s shame and he’s getting off on that. Or maybe he’s really attracted to the guy and watching his wife get fucked is just cover for watching that dude.”

Pausing to sip his coffee, my husband then shook his head and added the kicker: 

“All of that makes at least some sense to me. What I don’t get is why he’d want to run Christian Liberty University, for fuck’s sake. You can’t be associated with a place like that and walk around thinking your sex life isn’t going to be scrutinized, along with every other moral and ethical position you take. To me, that sounds like a shit job for a cuckold, or anyone else who leads an even mildly interesting life, to take.”

Sounds about right. But in fairness to Jerry, I suppose that sort of forthright explanation of stepping away from his post at Liberty wouldn’t have sounded nearly as good in The Washington Examiner as shoving his wife into traffic disguised as a mea culpa.
