In her newest missive from the dark corners of cyberspace, Calico looks at porn star Mia Khalifa’s campaign go get a video gaming company to raise the rating of her favorite basketball player in its upcoming NBA game release — a situation which hardly could have been envisioned in the pre-internet age. What’s next; self-aware video game characters returning the favor to stump for their favorite porn stars during porn-award season? Stranger still, could this *already* be happening?
Read all about it in Calico’s latest post, “Things I Never Thought I’d See, Vol. 489,381”

As a sci-fi loving child of the 70s, I grew up wondering about the future and speculating a lot about the types of technology and capabilities we would have in the 21st century.
Would we have flying cars? How soon would humans walk on Mars? At some point, would people finally come up with a design for milk cartons I could open without tearing them to shreds, causing little flakes of cardboard to infest the liquid within?
Over the decades, I’ve seen many things come along which were (more or less) expected to come about eventually, like sophisticated, handheld mobile devices, tremendous increases in computer processing power and the introduction of alternative-fuel vehicles.
At the same time, many things nobody could have foreseen back in the 70s have come to pass as well, like multiple comebacks to prominence of disco-era fashion, a certain obnoxious real estate tycoon getting elected President or Ben-Fucking-Affleck directing an Oscar-winning film. (I’m still in denial with respect to two of these things, btw.)

Back in the 70s, I never once gave a thought to the possibility of porn performers becoming true public figures – mostly because I didn’t know what a porn star was until I was a teenager. Even once I did come to think of such a development as a possibility though, I never imagined I’d read an article about a porn star leading the charge in demanding that a video game company change its rating of a professional basketball player.
We All Have Our Causes, I Suppose
At a time when celebrities are increasingly turning to social media as a platform to promote various causes, like John Legend’s support of the Show Me Campaign, or Emma Watson’s work on behalf of the United Nations and HeforShe, it makes sense Mia Khalifa would take to Twitter to stump for her cause – which, in this case, is an effort to get 2K Games to increase its rating for the Washington Wizard’s John Wall in its upcoming release of NBA 2K18.
I’m sure to some people, this seems like a trivial thing; who cares what John Wall’s ‘rating’ is in some dumb video game? Well, for starters, John Wall does.
Obviously, Mia Khalifa cares, too – and she cares quite a bit, evidently.
This Ronnie2K Fellow Is A Tough Sell
After initially challenging Ronnie2K, a marketing director for 2K Games, to a game of HORSE, Khalifa upped the persuasive ante when Ronnie declined the invitation to ball.
“I’ll let you touch my tiddies,” Khalifa tweeted.
Displaying the sort of restraint and fortitude many people probably don’t associate with male gamers (or those who market to them), Ronnie declined this appeal too, terming the game rating “more sacred” than the opportunity to fondle Khalifa’s bewbs.
I don’t know Ronnie; that rating not only changes with each new release of the game, it changes throughout the year. Touching Mia’s boobs, on the other hand, would be an experience nobody could ever take away from you – kind of like winning an NBA championship, only with fewer people pouring champagne on your head afterwards.
Next Step: Self-Aware Video Game AI Lobbying On Behalf Of Real Humans
Since I started out this post by referencing predictions and visions of the future people had several decades back, I figure I’ll close it by offering a similar hunch about where this whole interplay between video games, porn performers and social media is heading in the years to come.
As artificial intelligence improves and virtual reality becomes a bigger part of the entertainment landscape, I can see a future when we don’t have to speak on behalf of video game characters, avatars and digital proxies of real humans anymore, because they will be able to fend for themselves.
Along those lines, I figure we’re about two years away from the digital John Wall repaying Khalifa for her support by hacking the Adult Video News network to facilitate personally casting thousands of votes for Khalifa as his “Favorite Female Star” and/or “Social Media Star.”
Wait a minute here; looking over the AVN Awards list for last year, I see Riley Reid won both the honors mentioned above; perhaps the surreptitious AI-voting has already begun?
AVN, I hereby demand an immediate investigation! After all, if Riley Reid’s favorite NBA player is Timofey Mozgov, we may have another instance of Russia meddling in a U.S. election…
