Back in March of 2016, when the home and business of Snellville Mayor Tom Witts were raided by police, the man in charge of the investigation, Gwinnett County District Attorney Danny Porter, said the computers and documents seized in the raids were part of his office inspecting campaign affidavits in which Witts swore he didn’t own any money to the state of Georgia.
“From there, we’ve also moved into other areas about use of campaign funds and withholding taxes in his private business,” Porter said at the time.
Nearly a year later, as Porter was readying to take the case to a grand jury, allegations of personal and corporate tax evasion were still the focus, not just of the investigation, but the headlines related to it, as well.
Now that Witts has been charged with 65 felonies, it’s the sole misdemeanor in the mix which is getting the bulk of the headlines. Why? Because that misdemeanor involves the clickbait-friendly word “porn.”
Call It What You Will, Except Unpredictable
If there’s one thing I’m not in response to this word-choice fact, it’s shocked.
After all, even when the underlying story has nothing at all to do with sexually-explicit material, the word porn still finds its way into the headline, whether the actual subject is war, poverty, real estate, food, or even the prospect of political assassination.
As such, when a story involves actual porn, even in a tangential way, it’s not surprising when headline writers seize the opportunity to put the word front and center.
Still, when the story at hand involves allegations of tax evasion and theft of public funds on a pretty big scale, I can’t help but cringe at the least serious of the charges being the one which gets to see its name in lights, so to speak.
No Matter How You Slice It, Porn Is Hardly The Story Here
According to an account of the indictment in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Witts is delinquent on almost $130,000 in taxes (covering years for which Witts once swore he owed nothing), guilty of purposefully underreporting his income and steering more than half his campaign funds toward paying for personal expenses, including sea cruises and flights taken for personal, non-governmental travel.
In there, somewhere, is an unspecified amount of funds Witts used to pay for an account on Adult-Share.net, which bills itself as “The Original Cuckold Video Site.” According to the site’s join page, a three-month membership costs a whopping $14.99.
Let’s say Witts has been a member of the site and he’s been using campaign funds to pay for that membership since May 1, 2015 – roughly six months before he was elected mayor. At $14.99 every three months, the grand total of his membership cost would be $149.90 – which would include several weeks to come before the next “billing anniversary.”
I’m not saying it’s no big deal for a politician to misuse $150 in campaign and/or state funds, but I am saying when it appears there’s thousands of dollars at issue used for other purposes over the same interval, and six figures in back-taxes allegedly owed by the same fellow, maybe $150 worth of porn isn’t the most newsworthy aspect of a 66-count indictment? Just a thought.
You Know Who Agrees With Me? The Prosecutor
In reading over his comments about the investigation and looming prosecution, Porter sure doesn’t seem to think Witts’ Adult-Share membership is the highest crime at issue in this case, either.
“I’ve never seen anything like this,” Porter said of Witts’ alleged actions, “and I’ve never seen this sort of broad array of entitlement.”
Chief among Porter’s concerns, appropriately enough, appears to be the bigger-ticket items, like the back-taxes owed and Witts’ ongoing lack of payment thereof.
“We believe the evidence would show that he was showed notification of his delinquencies, that he was given the opportunity to make or enter into a payment plan, and other than a $300 payment on one of the deficiency notice, he’s made no effort to pay the taxes,” Witts said.
What, no mention of the cuckold videos? Where are this Porter guy’s priorities? I mean, if Witt isn’t stopped before December, he’s likely to spend another $15 of campaign funds on porn!
Oh well, I suppose this other stuff is important, too – like the whole “sale of property to political subdivision by officer or employee” thing, in which Witts allegedly got a look at bids to perform work for the city from other contractors, giving him the opportunity to undercut those bids with competing bids from his own company. This might sound like “smart business” to some people, but seeing as how its illegal and unethical as hell, it’s also the sort of thing a mayor probably shouldn’t do.
But hey – this guy watches cuckold porn on other peoples’ nickels, so why bother mentioning a little felonious self-dealing in your headline? Nobody is going to click on that.
