5 Ways Social Media has Changed the Art of Offline Dating

Do you remember what dating used to be like? Walking up to that guy or girl you’ve noticed and dropping a smooth line just to get his/her phone number? Well, all that has changed – you can now do a quick Facebook or Snapchat username search and virtually everything you need to know about the person you’re interested in is in the palm of your hand.

With that in mind, let’s take a look at the five ways social media has changed the art of offline dating.

1. Fake Sense of Security

Seeing as most social media sites contain a lot of details about their users, it’s only natural to assume that you’ll know all there is to know about the person you’re supposed to go on a date with. However, this isn’t always the case.

Although certain websites allow you to fill out information about yourself, nobody can guarantee that whatever you’ve written there is 100% true. This means that there are a lot of people who think they know who they’re about to date, while actually they might not know a single fact about them.

2. Weird Conversations

Once you start chatting with someone online, you get impressed by their eloquence and sophistication, but when you meet them in person, you realize that they can’t form a proper sentence. Sounds weird, doesn’t it?

Well, ever since the rise of social media and dating site, there’s also been an increase of individuals who present themselves as something they’re not online, yet they almost always fail to follow through with their masquerade when it comes to an actual, offline date. Doesn’t sound weird anymore, that’s for sure.

3. Easier Contacting

Like we’ve mentioned before, dating used to take a lot more before the invention of social media. Not only did you need to actually physically walk up to someone and ask for their number, but you also needed a whole lot of courage to do that in a crowded club with all of their and your friends watching.

But since we now have Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, and the likes, the mandatory face-time that you had to have before is no longer necessary. Initiating contact and flirting has never been easier – and even if you get rejected, there’s no one there to witness it.

4. Less Privacy

Before we were introduced to social media, it didn’t take a lot of effort to keep your private life, well, private. Now, however, even those who aren’t active on social media websites can’t do a lot to keep their private lives from going public.

Sometimes entire social networks will get updated as you enter a relationship, exit one, get engaged, start seeing more than one person, and so on. If you’re not a Facebook-freak or a Twitter-junkie, you’re still in danger of having others post about your life, which means there’s no real way of keeping things to yourself in this modern age of social media.

5. Strange Signals

Despite the fact that playing the dating game on the internet is more convenient and less-time consuming, once upon a time all you had to do is read someone body language or tone of voice in order to know if that person likes you or not.

Trying to figure out if someone on a social media site is into you is such a confusing process, you won’t know what you’re doing half the time. Should you count their posts or should you watch for any changes in their profile info? Nobody knows, really.
