I had the pleasure to sit down with Wasteland.com founder and director, Colin Rowntree, today to talk about the new phenomena, Virtual Reality Erotica. Q: VR seems to be the hot new topic in adult entertainment. How is this different from the 3D craze a few years ago that fell flat?
Colin: VR is a new breed of video technology that allows viewers to actually interact with the environment. Filmed with special cameras, the viewer can, by simply turning their head, look around the set 360 degrees, and in some instances, make things “happen” by looking at objects they want to take action with. This is very different from the previous wave of 3D as it allows viewers to feel like they are actually on the set or in the room with the performers and interact with the environment.
Q: What sort of equipment would a viewer need to have to watch VR erotica and porn?
Colin: The nice thing about the way VR is developing, is that users have a wide range of options for viewing and interacting. This can range from a rather pricey Oculus Rex headset all the way down to Free VR Goggles which the user can simply slip in their smartphone to interact with the video or live show. Many sites are also now giving these away to members as an incentive to start exploring this technology.
Q: Do you think erotica and fetish producers will adopt VR Porn?
Colin: I am seeing a steady stream of producers now exploring VR production, and a few are already live, offering VR via mobile phone apps.
