Teeth Whitening, Nail Strengthening and More

The older I get the more I want to rely on myself more rather than a big pharmaceutical company or corporation. So on my down time recently, I’ve started to browse DIY websites and blogs. I guess it’s kind of an obsession/ hobby of mine as of late. I look at everything from crafts, to upcycling, to natural beauty recipes. I find some pretty amazing things while scouring the world wide web and thought maybe it’s about time I share some of these tricks, tips and so on with you guys!

Natural Teeth Whitener:

Recipe #1: Peroxide and Baking Soda Teeth Whitening: combine baking soda and a small amount hydrogen peroxide ( the clear liquidone that you use on cuts, 3% or less) to form a thick paste. Brush your teeth with the paste and then rinse mouth thoroughly. It’s important not to swallow while brushing.

Recipe #2: Baking Soda, Glycerin and Peppermint Extract
To make this baking soda teeth whitening recipe, mix about 5 to 6 teaspoons of baking soda with about 3 to 4 teaspoons of vegetable glycerin and make a fine paste. Now, add about half spoon salt and a few drops of peppermint oil or extract to it. Again, mix all the ingredients thoroughly, and then use it as a toothpaste to whiten your teeth.

What you have to be careful about when using one of these recipes to whiten your teethy is over abuse. Do not brush or rub your teeth vigorously, as it can damage the enamel of your teeth. Excessive and long term use of baking soda can corrode your teeth, as it is an abrasive material. So, be sure to use it in moderation, and talk to your dentist or physician, regarding how frequently it can be used for whitening your teeth. Also try to use a soft tooth brush rather than a medium or hard one and avoid brushing your gums with the paste.

Nail Strengthening:


  • 1 cup vaseline or petroleum jelly
  • 2 Tbs Honey
  • 2 Tbs Bees Wax
  • 6Tbs Liquid Glycerin (found at almost any pharmacy or health store)
  • 10 drops of Lemon essential oil
  • Candle Dye if you want to tint the balm with color

Mix all ingredients except Lemon oil together and melt down over low heat using a double boiler method. Add essential oil just before pouring. Once it has melted and blended together pour into a suitable container, I like using small metal tins that I get from the Dollar Store.

Two Method Treatments:

Method 1 – Soak your nail in 4 tbsp cider vinegar for 2 minutes.

Method 2 – Put 1 tsp table salt in a glass of cold water and soak your nails in the solution for 2 minutes

I like doing these two treatments one after another since the vinegar is really good at whitening your nails.

Protein is important for naturally strong nails. Your nails, composed mainly of the protein hard keratin, are continually forming and pushing forth from the matrix–the hidden base of the nail, tucked beneath the cuticle. Aid the process by consuming tissue-building sources of protein found in eggs, milk, cheese, poultry and seafood. A good tip is to just incorporate eating one yogurt daily with your breakfast or as a snack. Not only is this good for your nails but it’s also great for your digestive track and your bones=) My mom swears that taking vitamin E capsules everyday keeps her nails strong and chip free.

Spa Tricks:

Rose Water: Some people don’t like the smell of rose water, my boyfriend for instance, but I personally love it. I filled a little spray bottle with it and in the summer instead of moisturizing with cream I just spray my face with it. Not only is rose water a great astringent, it also moisturizes and helps you up with its aroma. I carry the little bottle around with me and when I feel like my face is grimy in the hot summer sun, I simply spray some more on and use a kleenex to wipe off the excess. You can make your own rose water by firmly packing a cup with rose petals and than adding them to 2 boiling cups of water. Cover and steep until the liquid is cool. Strain and squeeze out the liquid from the petals and refrigerate the now rose water in a sterilized jar. Your DIY rose water will not last as long as a store bought one because it is not distilled, so make sure to change it every tow weeks.

Hot Lotions: Before jumping into the shower, stash your daily body lotion on top of a radiator or heating vent so it’s warmed up when you rub it on. It feels so nice, especially in the winter to have some soothing warm lotion to put on after a shower or bath. Your skin will soak it right up. BE careful though, warm lotion is runnier than when it’s cold so watch out that it doesn’t come rushing out of the tube!
