Slixa shines a spotlight on Mother’s Day with an insightful and inspiring blog post from resident sex and relationships expert Andre Shakti at
Slixa.com, ‘For Mother’s Day: 5 Stories of Sex Workers and Their Super Supportive Moms’.
“Sex workers frequently opt to withhold their work from their parents, and for good reason. I’ve met many a sex worker who has been excommunicated from their family simply because of what they do for a living,” writes Shakti. “This Mother’s Day… I wanted to carve out some intentional time to commend all the supportive moms of sex workers out there.”
Shakti interviewed five out-and-proud adult performers and their super-supportive moms about their work, respective journeys and relationships with one another. For one sex worker, Maggie, she describes the “privilege really to be able to be so open with my mother about my life and to feel empowered to do whatever is right for me.”
Another entertainer, Petra, emphasizes that her mother Ellen “never pushed me to do things I didn’t want to do. She was always very supportive of me as an individual, and I like to think being a career sex worker (and accepting myself as one!) has been easier for me in a few ways because I was brought up to celebrate lifestyles and thinking that others find unconventional.”
For Danielle, she relies on mom Agnes for not only emotional protection but physical as well: “We worked out a system where I am her safe call,” says Agnes. “This made me more comfortable and her as safe as possible in her interactions with her clients.”
Peppermint said of her mom Alicia, “I’ve never felt judged or criticized by her and I can always come to her for support and advice if I encounter challenges in my life.” Alicia said in return, ““My acceptance and understanding of my daughter’s work remains positive and always will as long as she’s having fun doing it. Really, if she’s happy, so am I.”
Another sex worker, Lydia Love, noted that “this industry can be very isolating at times and it’s a great feeling knowing that whenever I need a break I can take a flight to my mom and decompress.” Her mother Dawn agreed, adding, “You are the one person that they can 100% trust; you should be their support system… heck, if she’s going to do this then we are all in.”
