In the 21 years I have been working behind the scenes in the adult industry, I’ve seen an interesting thing that happens repeatedly on the internet:
1. People do stupid, mean or illegal things;
2. In response, new companies and technologies arise to combat the “evil of the moment”.
Rinse and repeat…
Read on…
This ranges from piracy (with the advent of DMCA take-down services), to child porn (which lead to the founding of ASACP to fight it). Although things have been relatively calm on the “evil-doer” front the past year or so, the one BIG story of 2015-16 is Revenge Porn. This has effected countless people who have had compromising sexual photos and videos of them released onto the internet in retaliation for the relationship turning sour. At this point, most of the worst offender “Revenge Porn” sites have been taken down by law enforcement, but our old “friends”, The Tubes have a VERY popular category named “ex-girlfriends” which have literally tens of thousands of sex videos posted up without the consent of women (and men), and to make matters worse, these can easily be found on Google.
Shortly after posting up an article on the Revenge Porn topic last week, it came to my attention that a new Dutch company has entered the scene to help victims of revenge porn have this sort of content removed from the internet. And, as you know, this is not an easy task.
Introducing: LeakServ
I had the pleasure to correspond with one of the representatives of this company that offers an online removal service dedicated to eliminating revenge porn. Since Leakserv started late 2015, they have worked with over 100 victims and proudly say that their success rate in getting almost everything removed has been 99 percent. In total, the company has had over 100,000 pieces of revenge porn content removed. They are also getting some great mainstream press coverage!
According to their representative:
By using highly advanced tracking and monitoring services, we can state that we are the only company worldwide to offer this service.
How does it work?
Once a victim of revenge porn signs up for our service we will first index all leaked content and add this to our search engines. By using highly advanced tracking and monitoring services, we can identify the revenge porn content and its host. Once identified, we will serve a take-down notice, forcing the uploader or distributor to remove the content. We will also make sure that the content is blocked from search engines and that access to it is completely denied. By doing so, the further distribution of the content is stopped and contained.
Almost every website and their hosting companies have an abuse policy, next to the ones that will act upon a DMCA takedown notice and as you might know, also more and more countries are creating revenge porn laws.
How did you originally came up with the idea? And what is the founders’ background?
The idea to startup a business offering revenge porn protection came from Bart van Leeuwen who’s also the CEO of Onsist (www.onsist.com), where an increase of applications came from victims of revenge porn. Getting to know these victims and to learn the problems they have because of revenge porn was enough to decide to startup a business that would provide the services to help them.
Good to mention; we offer paid services and all earnings are used to improve our technologies and setup trainings to create awareness and inform mostly teenagers about revenge porn and what the consequences can be for a revenge porn victim. We’re planning on going to schools with this in the near future and we also want to setup a cooperation with police departments in order to give victims of revenge porn the best help.
There are other organizations that help revenge porn victims too, but this is more with advice and support. From what we’ve seen is that victims have to find the revenge porn content themselves and report it to them. When victims come to us we offer the same, only we actively track down the revenge porn content and remove it mostly within 24-48 hours, and keep doing this as long as the victim requires.
I also went through their website while writing this article and it’s all very clear, transparent and offers many options for anything and everything in the realm of Revenge Porn removal. And yes, nice things cost money (their basic service starts at $69/mo), but in this instance, well worth the expense to protect your identity and reputation.
If you or anyone you know has been the victim of revenge porn, I encourage you to visit their site to explore options.
