Interview: Where Have All The Retired Porn Stars Gone?

It’s a tricksy little aim of a title, isn’t it? Because obviously, with the piracy of porn booming, the recent threat of HIV outbreaks, and the fact that many and more stars are financially indebted to also including escorting as their list of services, retirees aren’t on the downfall. But what do they do? Where do they go?

A recent interview with POV director Billy Watson found porn star Gauge in the informer’s seat. Though she retired a few years ago (eight, actually), she is now back, and goes into detail what it was like in the “regular civilian” world. She endured haters from all angles, just because she was searching for another passion while her former passion was plastered all over tube sites on the internet. Systematically accused of committing sins through her performing by classmates, one has to bring about the reality that these accusers were also the ones viewing the porn. Pot calling the kettle, anyone? Gauge entertained the masses, and while inside the industry she was thanked for it, she was receiving a healthy does of “you can’t sit with us” at the real world lunch table. It’s a sad tale of woe. But, she’s back, to the applause of many fans.

Aurora Snow sat down to explain to readers and questioning viewers everywhere her final exit, and why exactly people kept returning to the business in the first place. She finally “got out” of the industry, but had to adapt to major change, starting with just a location flip-flop. As she puts it, “I moved to the Midwest, to a sparsely populated town in the middle of nowhere. My new neighbors were the four-legged kind that moo.” And that is her advice going forward; push “eject” on your life and completely surround yourself with another set of surroundings, without the lure of LA and familiarity so close. She tweets a lot, and has found other employment opportunities without the porn cam rolling.

Maybe not so much of an interview, Lexi Bloom took her voice to Reddit to do an Ask Me Anything, and of course it was pretty much an expose of the industry. Some kind of shocking (depending on your outlook) answers:

It would be inappropriate of me not to include the infamous Sasha Grey here. This is a girl that is still widely known as an international pornstar, but after retiring years ago, actually has successfully crossed into “mainstream” hobbies. Music (though she quit that band last month). Photography. Book writing. Indie Films. A painfully refreshing (and simple) website. Though notably she does focus all of this artistic dotings on sexuality, you’d be wise to consider the tastefulness in undertone, the reality, the sensual strings of her personality drifting through them. But hey, she’s still getting that respect and approval in the public eye…the “regular citizens” of the world. Sasha Grey is an icon dripping with fierce know-how. Good job, SG. Oh yeah, and here she is on the August cover of Rolling Stone Spain, slapping you in the face with that fierceness:

Finally, I don’t understand why this “interview” with Ava Rose is titled Life Lessons from Former Porn Star Ava Rose, but she does encapsulate the responsibility shift of growing older in the industry, so take a look. There’s a heartstring-pulling moment where you hope all will work out for her family.

After this little review of some of the retirees in porn, we still have to answer the question, where do they go after they throw in the heels? School. It’s school. It’s experimentation with new careers and they have to start at the bottom just as the majority of the population does. Will this ever get easier for them, to switch lifestyles?
