By now, you have probably heard of and been following the recent porn “scandal” at Duke University involving Belle Knox, a student at that venerable institution of higher learning.
Today, CNN released a full interview with her where she speaks her mind, defends her choices and waxes a little philosophical about porn, society and how things tend to get muddled up when worlds collide. Let’s take a look:
What impressed me about this entire story is how FAST word spread at Duke, how the reaction made the collective student body that began shunning and harassing her look pretty ignorant and backward, and, most importantly, how Belle speaking out in the media made her look like the REALLY smart and empowered young woman that she is!
Of course, mainstream media needed to somehow put a spin on this that has nothing to do with her reality, in some misguided hope of excusing Belle and laying blame for her life in porn on the dysfunction of the student loan and debt system.
CBS News went so far as to theorize:
“Yet hidden in the firestorm is a question about money and aspirations: With the spiraling cost of college, can students expect to graduate without significant debt? And how far should students go to graduate debt-free?”
Well, that’s a dandy observation, but has literally nothing do do with Belle Knox making the informed choice to become an adult film actress. She likes it. It pays well. She isn’t doing this out of some downtrodden exploited victim motivation. This is her choice and she has a very healthy attitude about it, and her life in general!
In traditional yellow journalism style, the NY Daily News piped in with it’s own little bit of sensationalist verbiage, saying,
“Belle Knox, with a dozen skin-flicks under her belt, was back in Los Angeles on Wednesday preparing for another porn casting call. The budding porn star — featured in films like “Lick My Lips” and “How Do You Like It?” — hopes to screw her way all the way to graduation.”
sigh…..
However, Belle herself summed it up nicely in that interview, retorting, “I really enjoy sex, and I’ve always loved watching porn, so it just seemed like I could pay my way through college doing something I really love doing,” Knox, a women’s studies and sociology major, told the Daily News.
Knox added: “I think it’s extremely hypocritical that the same society that consumes me is also condemning me.”
The topic of “slut shaming” is a massive one – far too large to delve into here. The sole purpose of this post is to get your eyeballs on the video interview that perhaps sparks some thoughtful discussion. And, to give a solid round of applause to Belle Knox for eloquently defending her choices against stiff opposition (pun intended).
Yours in Porn,
Coleen
