One popular trend these days is that a lot of mainstream media is doing coverage of what happens behind the scenes at porn shoots. This is a GOOD thing, as when readers see what goes on “behind the porn curtain”, they get a better idea of what goes into production and connect with the performers much more than ever.
The added bonus is that it, to some degree anyway, it makes porn more a pure entertainment form rather than some strange version of sex education for the masses. Much like the fashion industry shapes women’s views and expectations of what are “normal” body types and appearances, porn also can provide some fairly warped indicators about genitalia and sex in general.
Let’s take a peek at a funny College Humor video that illustrates this:

A Reddit thread has asked people in the porn industry, “What is something the viewers really don’t know?” and the answers are … enlightening. We can’t vouch for the experience of the writers, but all claim to have worked in the porn industry or to have been closely involved in it at some point or another.
According the posts on the Reddit thread:
1. Porn sets smell bad.
“Sex stinks when it’s not your own.” —DongLaiCha2. It’s not all work, work, work.
“There is a lot of pausing, a lot of laughing, a lot of texting, etc, in between shots.” —pantyraid70363. The “performers” are usually in control.
“Anyone being penetrated can call cut.” —CalvinDehaze4. Bondage scenes are fiddly.
“I’ve rigged and shot for bondage porn before. The bulk of the effort is the tying. I love it, but damn, does it take forever. God forbid you have a wiggly model.”—DaveTheRoper5. Guys aren’t just walking around with massive erections for hours.
“It’s actually pretty hard to get and maintain an erection on set. Making porn is pretty unsexy.” —pornishard6. Porn takes ages.
“I’ve been in over 40 pornos, they’re usually half an hour or so long for each scene. But I’m on set for anywhere from five to 12 hours.” —mrsinsomnia7. The “money shot” is often fake.
“If a guy can’t produce, there’s a million ways to fake it, and they are used much more readily than you’d think. No director wants to stand around while a guy who’s been hard for three hours tried to jerk out a tiny little spit of cum. They’ll move right to the tricks [like] running a tube up the back of the guys dick, giving the guy a handful of milky lube, directly shooting lotion onto it.” —pantyraid7036“Cumshots in still pictures are icing sugar. It’s fairly common to use fake cum as coffee sweetener on set.” —HannibalDolomite
8. Safety is key.
“We undergo a rigorous testing protocol called the PASS system in which we are tested every two weeks for a whole panel of the best STD tests on the market.” —eladarling9. Everyone gets hungry.
“I remember being hungry a lot because I’d worry about being bloated on camera, etc. … there was one time I was filming and the director kept telling me off for staring at a plate of sandwiches for the crew. That’s when I realised porn wasn’t my vocation in life and that I preferred a nice ham and cheese triangle-cut sandwich over money and dick.” —hotporridge10. Orgasms are a mixed bag.
“Sometimes the actresses do orgasm for real. Sometimes it’s 100 percent performance.” —pornishard 1078“The women are faking it some of the time. We try to cast couples or friends who are already intimate with each other.” —CalvinDehaze
11. It is not shot chronologically as one long scene.
“There’s usually time between the guy pulling out and the money shot where he’s standing there furiously masturbating for a few minutes in front of everyone watching and waiting for him to come. Really fucking awkward.” —papasmurf826“Men have to keep hard between setups, so a lot of the time they’re just standing there jacking themselves off or feeling up their co-star.” —CalvinDehaze
12. In fact, things are often shot back-to-front.
“A lot of the time the cumshot is filmed first, then the sex. Means the guys last longer for the actual penetration.” —MissCarrieNation13. Anal sex scenes can involve a lot of prep.
“Seriously. Major enema action, waxing and bleaching, sometimes even fasting the day before so that very little poop is in your tubes. The enemas/fasting/bleaching/waxing are done mostly by porn actresses — for various reasons … but mostly because their butt needs to conform to porn standards on camera.” —gasolinerainbow14. The angles are all fake.
“When you see that close-up of the dick going in and out of her, it’s because they positioned to the side, and only like an inch or two is going in and out.” —pantyraid703615. That “we’ve just used this random girl off the street” porn is all fake.
“All performers have to sign papers and do contracts, so the girls they randomly pick up off the street was planted there from the start.” —pornishard16. Size really doesn’t matter.
“There is no indicator for dick size. Feet, hands, height, Asian, it’s all B.S. The only stereotype that held true were black men’s dicks being huge. Same thing for the size of vaginas.” —CalvinDehaze17. The doughnuts suck.
“Most of the time they are stale, and the options are few, I cannot count how many time I’ve had to settle for a Boston cream, or a jelly-filled donut. I’m a fan of sour cream-glazed or chocolate dip so it was a pretty big let down for me.” —COOLIOS_DOODY_CHUTE
Having been crew on set for almost 20 years at Wasteland.com (Kinky Sex Studio), and Sssh.com (Porn For Women and Couples), I can confirm that much of what was reported on the Reddit thread is fairly accurate (except that our doughnuts DON’T suck!).
Last year, I posted up a funny YouTube video that seems appropriate to revive for this article!
