The web is buzzing with news of Ms Jenner and while I don’t want to give The Kardashians and their brood any more attention, this certainly is attention worth giving! It can’t have been easy to have come out under such scrutiny. As usual, the internet has imploded with people being either supportive or dicks. It’s interesting that there doesn’t seem to be any of the usual fence sitters. Even the most casually uninterested seem to fall in either the yay or nay camp. In other words, everybody seems to have an opinion.
But hey, I say, if you’re going to come out, then why not do it in style and be on the cover of Vanity Fair! We at Erotic Scribes are uber happy to see that more trans folk are able to live their truth, and hopefully with Caitlyn Jenner and Laverne Cox leading the way more people people will be more accepting – although truth be told, more people seem to be supportive and accepting than I expected.
Here’s the thing though, Caitlyn now that you’re a woman… are you sure you wanna be one? I mean, we do get the short end of the stick here. Check out what Jon Stewart has to say:
Yeah, not even a minute in and Jenner’s already being judged by her looks, compared with other women and had her hotness compared to her age. Wowzer! It ain’t easy being a (trans)woman.
Especially touching is Laverne Cox’ commentary on her Tumblr where like all of us, she’s happy that Jenner is out, “I must echo these comments in the vernacular, “Yasss Gawd! Werk Caitlyn! Get it!” But this has made me reflect critically on my own desires to ‘work a photo shoot’, to serve up various forms of glamour, power, sexiness, body affirming, racially empowering images of the various sides of my black, trans womanhood.”
She explains that Jenner coming out is much, much more than just what she looks like, “Yes, Caitlyn looks amazing and is beautiful but what I think is most beautiful about her is her heart and soul, the ways she has allowed the world into her vulnerabilities.”
I think we forget the 65-year journey it took for Jenner to get here, and to have that reduced with a flippant comment about whether or not you will bang her is kinda disappointing. I am truly glad that Jenner is out. It must be so much more peaceful in her heart knowing that she can be her true self. But let’s not forget that this isn’t the end for her or other trans people out there. Now that she is a woman, she will be under much more scrutiny, her accomplishments as Bruce Jenner might be underplayed or made fun of, and all the other bits and bobs that comes with being a woman. I’m not saying go back, I’m just saying, buckle up Caitlyn! The party has just begun.
Either way, the ride is a long one, and for now at least I for one am excited to know that there is one more person in the world able to live as their authentic self. I look forward to Jenner’s future. Welcome Caitlyn, the ride might be bumpy but hey! You’re a woman now, you can take it!
