OMG, AI Assisted Fake Porn Is Here And WE’RE ALL DOOMED!!!

Technology Created This Problem – But Technology Can Solve It, Too

In her new post, Calico examines something which is freaking out a lot of people: AI -assisted face-swap fake porn. Is this new phenomenon a harbinger of the End of Days, or just something a handful of Reddit geeks are doing for the lulz? Should you consider going off the grid and moving into a cabin in the wilds of Montana, or is time to take a few deep breaths, maybe a sip or two of wine, and consider the possibility these porn-fakes might be easily debunked as needed by the same sort of technology which enabled their creation in the first place? Read all about it in the new post “OMG, AI-Assisted Fake Porn Is Here And WE’RE ALL DOOMED!!!”

Growing up, my favorite newspaper was the Weekly World News. Admittedly, all I ever read from it were the headlines, because I did all my reading of the WWN while standing in line at the grocery store with my mother.

The only time I asked if I could toss a copy in the cart to take home, I was met with such severe disapproval, I dared not ask again.

“You are NOT bringing that trash home,” mom snapped (a sentiment I’d later hear about various boys I dated, but that’s another mom-story). “If you want to read, we have plenty of good books and we get the real newspaper delivered every morning.”

The difference between my reaction to the WWN and mom’s, I’ve always thought, was that she approached the publication like it was an actual newspaper packed full of lies, while I looked at it as a printed source of goofball entertainment which happened to have the word “news” in its title.

Why should I be upset over “news stories” which are clearly only the latter of those two words, and not meant to be believed? To me, that would be like taking The Onion to task for misleading people about the words and deeds of various “area men.”

Of course, the world has changed a lot since the early 80s, when mom and I had our brief, tense exchange about the WWN. Now, “fake news” is the rallying cry of a presidential administration, and people who publish fake stuff have gotten way better at creating their fakes – including AI-assisted face-swap porn.

Yes, It’s Potentially Problematic – But Calm The Fuck Down

From the first report I read about AI-assisted fake porn, one of the things which has stood out to me the most has been the panicked tone of the reporting. The headline of the article I linked to above, for example, is “AI-Assisted Fake Porn Is Here and We’re All Fucked.”

Now, on the one hand, that’s a clever double-entendre (if anybody’s face can be swapped into porn, then we’re all potential porn stars, and thereby fucked on film), but on the other hand, it also set the tone for the headlines which have followed on this subject.

Other hyperventilating instant classics include “Face-swap porn is now a thing and it’s truly terrifying,” and “AI-Generated Fake Celebrity Porn Is Surprisingly Realistic, Easy to Create, and Absolutely Terrifying” and “Fake Celebrity Porn Is Taking Over The Internet And No One Is Safe” and Motherboard’s follow up to their original, “We Are Truly Fucked: Everyone Is Making AI-Generated Fake Porn Now.”

While I can understand freaking out over the notion of someone swapping your face into a porn video, one benefit to so much attention being paid to the possibility is if/when something like that happens, telling people “that’s one of those AI-assisted fakes, I’ve never been in a porn video,” should suffice as an explanation for most reasonable people.

As for unreasonable people… well, let’s hope you don’t work for, live with, answer to or get involved in relationships with any of those. But if you do, try to tamp down your panic by thinking about how satisfying it will be to embarrass such unreasonable people with proof they’ve been duped by a stupid fake video created by some dweeb with a Reddit handle like “derpfakepronLOL55.”

Technology Created This Problem – But Technology Can Solve It, Too

There’s another important point which was made in one of those articles with the freaked-out headlines which hasn’t gotten nearly enough attention in the collective rush to freak the fuck out about AI-assisted face-swap porn.

“AI to detect those kinds of edited videos exists and is pretty good,” said Jen Golbeck, a computer scientist at the University of Maryland, as quoted in a Wired piece with the headline “People Can Put Your Face On Porn—And The Law Can’t Help You.”

“Separately, detecting porn is pretty straightforward,” Golbeck added. “So, for someplace like YouTube to do this, they would need to combine the porn detector they certainly have with an edited video detector. The technology should not be hard.”

If that doesn’t make you feel any better, try reminding yourself you’re not a celebrity (unless you are one, of course), which means there’s likely to be a lot less footage and images of you readily available which people can use to make these fakes (a handful of shots scraped from Facebook isn’t going to get the job done) and significantly less public interest in any fake porn in which face might wind up appearing.

Like most things you read fear-mongering headlines about, there are indeed real concerns and potential problems involved in AI-assisted face-swap porn; but they’re just not as earthshattering and world-ending as they appear to be when referenced by headlines with an all-caps “FUCKED” in the mix.
